FAQ
Questions, answered.
Everything people ask before recording their first Lesson.
The basics
What is Taught?
An app where you record first-person video of everyday tasks — loading a dishwasher, folding laundry, restocking a shelf — so robots can learn how people really do them. Taught turns those recordings into training data for robotics companies and pays the people who teach.
Who can take part?
At launch, adults 18 and older in the United States. Requesting early access puts you on the list; it doesn’t create an account.
Is this a job?
No. There are no shifts, no hourly pay and no minimum hours. You choose the Lessons you want to record, when you want to record them.
Do I need robotics experience?
No. You teach by doing the task the way you normally would.
Recording
Do I need special equipment?
Usually just a phone. Some Lessons need hands-free video, which means an inexpensive head or chest mount — see gear.
What is a Lesson?
A real-world task with clear recording requirements — what to show, how long, and which mount — designed to teach robots a useful physical skill.
How are recordings reviewed?
A quick automated check confirms the basics, like minimum length. Then a person reviews your recording against the Lesson’s requirements and tells you what they found.
Earning
How do I get paid?
Accepted Lessons earn a base award in Gold. Eligible Lessons can also earn royalties in Gold when they are licensed. You redeem Gold for gift cards. How earning works.
How much can I earn?
Base awards are small, and royalties depend on whether and how often your recordings are licensed — so there is no typical amount, and nothing is guaranteed. Taught is not a replacement for a paycheck.
Are royalties guaranteed?
No. Royalties depend on future licensing activity, and a royalty becomes available once the buyer’s payment settles.
Can the same Lesson earn more than once?
Eligible non-exclusive Lessons can be licensed to more than one robotics company, and each license can earn a royalty.
Why wouldn’t I just do hourly data work?
Hourly work pays for your time once. Taught is designed to let Teachers share in the longer-term licensing value of useful recordings.
Your data
Who buys the data?
Qualified robotics and embodied-AI companies. Buyers’ identities may be kept private, but every licensing event of your work is visible to you.
Can one company own my recording?
No. You own your original footage. Some buyer-funded Exclusive Lessons are licensed exclusively to one buyer — the Lesson says so before you record, and it pays a guaranteed one-time award instead of royalties.
What happens to my data?
Recordings are reviewed for quality, prepared as training data, licensed to qualified robotics and AI companies and may help train Taught's own AI models, under Taught's terms. You earn royalties when your recordings, or Taught models trained on them, are licensed or sold. You'll see which Lessons are exclusive before you record. Read the Terms of Service.
Does Taught record when I’m not filming a Lesson?
No. The app only captures video and motion data during a recording you start, and it stops when you stop.
